We grew old together, Otis and me. What was once so easy became so much harder and I knew it was time to say goodbye to my beloved friend of 14 years. I’m sure he didn’t want me to know he was in pain. He still wanted me to think he could hop into the car, or onto the couch, play ball, and do all the things he had always done with such delight and ease, but he couldn’t, as hard as he tried. His spirit lives in my heart and he will be with me always. James’ visit made it possible to say goodbye. I’m certain I could not have done so without his comfort and compassion. I will always treasure the clay paw print he made.
